Coolpix AW100 Rugged Compact Camera

The Nikon AW100 is a new waterproof, shock-proof, cold-resistant compact digital camera. The AW100 is Nikon’s first foray into the weather-proof camera market and is is waterproof to 10 meters, shock-proof to 1.5 meters, and freezeproof to as low as -10°C (14°F). The Coolpix AW100 also has a 16-megapixel back illuminated CMOS sensor, a 5x, 28-140mm equivalent zoom lens with lens-shift vibration reduction, 3-inch 460K-dot LCD monitor, full 1080p HD video with stereo sound, 3fps burst shooting, built-in GPS, a world map display and an electronic compass.

Nikon Coolpix AW100 was created with every intention of being competitive in the market. Technical specifications match today’s market demands, especially sport & outdoor enthusiasts who require camera to be at least as durable as their bodies are in the “hostile” natural environment. Regardless of whether you like to “storm” the deserts and get yourself all covered in sand, or you like to scuba dive and capture fascinating close-ups of underwater flora and fauna, Nikon Coolpix AW100 can be your close buddy, a “sidekick” following your every step of the road.

Compared to the rest of the rugged camera crowd, the Nikon AW100 is surprisingly light and relatively small. It does weigh more than the rubber Pentax Optio WG-1 GPS, but with a depth of less than 23mm, the AW100 is noticeably slimmer. Appearance-wise it's unfussy, and shares more in common with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT3 and Olympus Tough range of cameras, and it's certainly equally as sturdy. We're not talking black box recorder levels of robustness (the manual warns you not to sit down with the camera in the pocket of your trousers). But the Nikon Coolpix AW100 is certainly a well built and sealed camera that's likely to take family holiday punishment in its stride.

For those leading an adventurous life wishing to record it using a camera that can keep up as well as hold up, the Nikon Coolpix AW100 is a fine choice. What it is lacking in the noise-to-signal department, in somewhat flat colors and battery retention it makes up for with convenience, ease-of-use, versatility and overall fun. Until smartphones are waterproof, this camera is the one to use during outdoor activity. The camera element of the AW100 only produces so-so image quality, being geared more towards point-and-shoot users who will mainly use it in good lighting conditions. Noise at slow ISO speeds, light fall-off and inconsistent sharpness at the edge of the frame, and a poor night mode contribute to merely adequate photographs from the AW100. Video performance is much better thanks to the full HD 1080p mode with stereo sound, slow- and fast-motion options, the ability to use the optical zoom during recording and the economical MOV format, although the video features on offer are still somewhat basic.
