Choosing the right system as a new photographer by Gareth Handa
In the film days of photography, taking pictures with a high end camera was probably considering quite specialist. Now with the advent of digital photography anyone can take a picture and process them using their computer. Digital SLR camera sales are now at an all time high and more and more people are getting on board.
Choosing the right system for your photographer needs is obviously a very important thing. As you build up your camera equipment you can't chop and change brands easily without selling all your gear.
The biggest players in the SLR realm are Canon and Nikon. Each manufacturer is constantly trying to outdo each other by bringing out better sensors and lenses all the time. There are also a number of other brands including Pentax, Sony and Olympus.
The biggest decision you need to make is what type of photography are you looking to get into then pick a system that offers the best solution. If you look at the lens lineup, Canon and Nikon offer the best variety with Sony in a 3rd place. Sony do have some lenses however that easily outdo the Nikon or Canon counterparts.
The biggest thing to notice on the Olympus system for example is that their SLR bodies tend to come with IS (Image Stabilisation) built in. As a result, you can use any lens and get the instant benefits of IS. With the Canon and Nikon systems, you need to buy a lens with IS built in. This comes at a cost increase of about 10-20% per lens just for that luxury. Then you've also got the factor that not all lenses have IS. I for one haven't been too pleased that Canon haven't yet offered a 24-70mm lens with IS . Short primes are another example, IS is completely missing from their line-up. A camera with in-body IS coupled with a nice prime lens is a great photographers weapon.
While Nikon and Canon are the biggest player with the best support and are the most popular, do not disregard the others. I know plenty of photographers that make good use of the Pentax, Olympus or Sony systems. In fact Sony is supported by Carl Zeiss, who make the best lenses in the industry. While you can buy Carl Zeiss lenses for other systems, Sony is the only one that will autofocus with them attached.
As mentioned at the beginning of the article, once you've picked your system you're essentially committed to it. Think long and hard and choose wisely. Look through each system in detail and make your decision.
