The Olympus M.Zuiko 14-42mm Review – Compact Zoom Lens for Micro Four Thirds by Andrew Suryono
The M.Zuiko 14-42mm is a version of a collapsible standard zoom lens designed for the Micro Four Thirds system. The lens has a bayonet and internal focus mechanism. These elements are usually found in macro converter lenses. The M.Zuiko 14-42mm is very compact and this makes it suitable for the Micro Four Thirds system.
The M.Zuiko 14-42mm has a plastic barrel and lens mount and this makes the lens very light. The lens weighs about 110g and it is possible to collapse it to half its normal size. This will make it easy for you to store it. There is a switch on its zoom ring to allow you to collapse the M.Zuiko 14-42mm for storage. Switch this switch forward and ensure your zoom is set at more than 14mm.
The M.Zuiko 14-42mm also focuses through an in-built system that is very quick. The system is also quiet when you are focusing on your subjects. The focus and zoom rings on this lens are smooth and there is no zoom creep. This lens is best suited for polarizing and graduated filters using its 37mm filter thread. The filter thread at the front will not rotate when you are trying to zoom or focus.
The minimum focus distance on the M.Zuiko 14-42mm is 25cm and this means it is possible for you to get very close to the objects you want to capture. You can use this lens to capture images in tight spaces or frame filling close-ups. When the lens is set at f/3.5 and 14mm, it offers amazing sharpness. The sharpness on the image edges is also impressive when you use this lens. To get great sharpness across the entire frame, you should set the lens between f/5.6 and f/4. The chromatic aberrations of this lens are kept at a minimum across all zoom ranges.
When you are using this lens with Olympus Micro Four Thirds camera, it will correct distortions automatically. It is also flare resistant even when you focus on direct light. You will not experience any contrast loss with this lens. The lens does not have a hood, but you will not require one in most cases.
