Using a Service for Scanning 35mm Slides to Digital Will Save You in the Long Run   by Valerie Goettsch

Ordinarily scanning 35mm slides is not something we think about doing. but maybe we should. A good number of us have tons of 35mm slides and photos buried in an old box somewhere in our attic. Back in the day, slides were a common way to take and share pictures. Family slide shows of our holidays at the beach or Disney World were a highlight of childhood, and big screen slideshows were our means of sharing favorite memories.

But now for many of us, those slides lie long-forgotten, gathering dust, fading away and perhaps even getting moldy. Gradually slides could get darker and develop a blue tone or colors will lighten and become a little pink. Not very attractive, and it will only get worse. However, by scanning 35mm slides, negatives and photos, they'll get a brand new life, you will be preserving them permanently and now you can show them to your kids and grand kids.

Challenges with At-Home 35mm Slide Scanning

So we know we should be scanning 35mm slides if we want to preserve them, but should we do it at home or use a service? If you have even 500 slides and want to do it right, you need the right equipment, and that means buying a scanner. Medium-grade flat bed scanners typically cost approximately two hundred dollars. High-end slide scanners like the Nikon Cool Scan cost around fifteen hundred bucks. That stings! Plus, what do you do when your slides are fading or the colors have changed, or they're scratched? You may discover that all of your images require Photoshopping to return them to their original state. To do this properly you'll require good photo editing software as well as the ability to make the enhancements yourself, and no small amount of time.

A Slide Scanning Service Makes the Job Much Easier

The use of a slide scanning service will most definitely save you from many hours of tedium and possibly save you money as well. In addition to scanning 35mm slides to digital, they will also scan negatives and prints. You just have to box up your slides and photos and send them in. As part of the service they will remove dust and fingerprints as well as minor scratches and imperfections. After they have been digitized, most services will make corrections such as crop, redeye repair, and fixing faded or shifted colors. Envision this: those old photos of smiling faces and pixie cuts will have new life.

Digitized Images Burned to DVD

After your slides and photos have been scanned the originals will be sent back to you with a DVD of your new digital images. At this point you can get creative with you new photos. In addition to the joy of cleaning out some of the clutter in your garage, you'll be able to rearrange the pictures, make more DVD's to give to your family, make photobooks, and share them online.

Scanning 35mm slides to digital ensures they will be preserved for years to come and you won't have to worry about them getting dusty, fading or even lost or damaged to due fire, flood or some other disaster.
