D7000 Reviews - A Comparative Look at the Nikon by Daniel Charles
The launch of Nikon D7000 took everyone by surprise. In specification terms and features, it is more advanced than Nikon's earlier models. It offers a compelling upgrade option to both the D90 and D300S. In fact it is very much similar to D90, as it comes with a magnesium alloy body shell and a slightly thicker rubber coating on the hand grip, which combine to make it look much more professional. In addition, the Nikon D7000 offers the second highest resolution of any Nikon DSLR - 16.2 megapixels - trailing behind the only the 24 megapixels of the D3X.
With the extra resolution, the newly developed CMOS sensor offers an ISO span of 100 - 6400, expandable up to the equivalent of ISO 25,600.
The AF and metering systems of the D7000 are more advanced and represent a significant upgrade to those used in the D90. The new camera boasts a 39 point AF array with 9 cross type AF points and works in collaboration with a new 2016 pixel RGB metering sensor to allow 3D AF tracking. It has an upgraded movie specification up to Full HD - 1920 x1080 resolution at 24 fps. It can also maintain AF during live view and movie shooting by the AF-F mode.
The advanced features of Nikon D7000 put it one step ahead of other cameras of its kind. It supports 1080 p HD video recording, while the screen recognition system is a quite unique function that most other cameras don't have.
Other exciting features include a new 16.2 CMOS sensor, dual card slots, a new 39 point AF array and true HD movie mode with full time AF mode, as well as more customization options. Some of these features are inherited from Nikon's earlier DSLRs and improved on significantly. As this model has an Ai indexing tab on its lens mount, up to 9 non cpu lenses can be registered with the camera. This allows photographers to use virtually any Ai specification in aperture priority or manual mode, with almost no loss of functionality.
Some of the key features are:
· 16.2 megapixel CMOS sensor
· 1080p HD video recording with mic jack for external microphone
· ISO 100-6400 (plus H1 and H2 equivalent to ISO 12,800/25,600)
· 39 point AF system with 3D tracking
· Faster AF in Live View Mode
· Choice of 12 bit or 14 bit NEF (RAW)
· New 2016 pixel metering sensor
· Scene Recognition System ( see 2016 pixel sensor, above) aids WB/metering + focus accuracy
· Twin SD card slots
· 3.0 inch 921k dot LCD screen
· New Live View / Movie shooting switch
· Full time AF in Live View / Movie modes
· Up to 6 fps continuous shooting
· Lockable drive mode dial
· Electronic virtual horizon
· Shutter tested to 150K actuations
· Up to 9 non CPU lenses can be registered
Compared with the other Nikon DSLRs, this camera is lightweight, fast, quiet and a refined power house. With all these features, it provides an extraordinary image quality which can be viewed through the 3 inch rear LCD screen. Without doubt, it is the most advanced DSLR by Nikon yet.
