How to Make Money From Your Camera by Peter Gee
How to make money from your camera
Now that we have digital cameras it is much easier to make money from your hobby.
I'd like to focus on what I believe is the easiest way to succeed. I'm going to tell
you what equipment you need, which are popular subjects and where to sell your photos.
The only equipment that you really need is a digital camera with a minimum of
8 megapixels. With this camera you will be able to take very saleable pictures.
As you start out, you do not really need any other gear. As you progress you can
add an additional flash gun, close up lenses, filters etc.
I use a Nikon Coolpix 8700. This camera has a good zoom lens, auto or manual settings
and a built in flash. This is all I used for a long time without any other gear
and took and successfully sold many photos. I now do a lot of tabletop photography
and so have invested in a good quality tripod.
Popular Subjects
I have found that anything to do with Business sells very well. Examples being;
Pictures of money, credit cards, coins, calculators and some of my best sellers
are simply piles of old newspapers! One of my best sellers is a picture of a pair
of glasses and a pen lying on the financial pages of a newspaper. Very popular
pictures are of people, eating, playing, working, dining etc. Some subjects are
not so easy to sell because the market is saturated with them. Among the less
popular subjects are, sunsets, pets, nature and insects.
More Popular Subjects
Health and medical field - pictures of nurses, doctors, surgeons, A&E,
operating room, medical equipment, medications, situations, wellness,
physicals, check ups, technology, X-rays, shots, pharmacy, insurance, labs,
Business related photos - people conducting business, business
environment, equipment, style, design, symbols, attributes etc.
People in activities - Pictures of people doing something like dancing,
working, playing sports, laughing, eating, driving, building, are very popular.
Controversial issues - general politics, women, gender, sexuality,
crime, religion, education, family, war, race, environment, poverty, wealth.
These photos should be captured in good taste portraying the subjects without.
Religious faith - symbols, activities, locations, actions, traditions, and food.
Technology photos - lasers, fibre optics, equipment, digital chips, clean rooms,
Different occupations - Delivery person, florist, dentist, doctor, nurse,
construction worker, plumber, electrician, machinist, pilot, photographer,
teacher, banker, salesman, receptionist, policeman, judge,
Objects - everyday or strange objects depicting an idea or symbolic of an activity.
Objects like sun glasses, keys, money, sticky notes, baseball, or engine piston.
These items should be captured on plain white or black seamless backgrounds.
Close up shots - macro or close up shots of objects or people.
Under water photos - photos of underwater sea creatures, ocean topography, scuba diving and snorkelling.
Where to Sell Your Photos
I sell all of my pics on the internet through photo libraries. This is a really great way to sell.
All you need to do is take your pictures and upload them to a photo library.
They then market the pictures and you earn commission for each sale. Think about it,
you take the picture once, you upload it once and it sells regularly!
Upload a few hundred, or better, a few thousand pictures and you'll have money coming
in for years for work that you did a long time ago! Be aware that photo libraries are
not interested in what you might call "holiday snaps." They want well composed,
sharply focused pictures with good colour saturation.
Photo Libraries
I can recommend the following photo libraries;
Fotolia.com
Picture nation
Crestock.com
Shutterpoint.com
I have the most sales through fotolia. There are other libraries but I found that
some of them were so fussy that I didn't bother with them. Try Googling photo libraries
and see what comes up. I do hope that you have found "How to make money from your camera" a useful article.
So now you know what equipment you need, what subjects are most saleable and where to sell them. If you want to learn even more about this, and see a few of my pictures, click this link http://moneyfromyourcamera.synthasite.com/
