Canon Powershot SX210 IS Review by John Bradstreet
The Canon Powershot SX210 IS replaces the SX200 IS which was introduced in 2009. It was designed for the user who is looking for a compact camera that offers long range zoom capability with a host of other features while maintaining the simplicity of other point-and-shot cameras.
The SX210 IS is designed for the family or the travel photographer. It is equipped with a DIGIC 4 image processor, a wide angle 3" LCD screen, face detection technology and a 14X optical zoom with a built in optical image stabilizer.
The 14X optical zoom with image stabilizer allows the user to capture the shot while minimizing blur. The image stabilizing system detects both vertical and horizontal movement then moves the lens to compensate. This allows you to maintain focus and stability anytime you are using the telephoto capabilities of the SX210IS.
Canons DIGIC 4 processor combined with the 14 Megapixel sensor gives both quick response times as well as natural and vivid color reproduction. The DIGIC 4 also incorporates i-Contrast which takes care of those shots made in difficult lighting situations. It will prevent highlight blowout while retaining shadow detail.
The SX210 IS also includes Smart Auto and Easy modes with Scene Detection Technology which allows for care free shooting. The camera will automatically analyze for brightness, people, distance and color and then choose from one of 22 scene variations to optimize settings and give the best results. This lets the user concentrate on the subject at hand while the camera is taking care of all of the technical details of the shot.
While capturing beautiful stills the camera also can shot HD movies with stereo on demand. It has a dedicated movie button so you can start shooting video even if you are not in Movie mode. This is the first Canon compact camera to incorporate Smart Auto Technology to movies which can detect the best settings from 18 variables and give you optimal results. The 720p HD footage is recorded at 30 fps and gives the user high quality audio. The 14X zoom can capture those far away shots that would normally be out of range. It also comes with CameraWindow software that makes it convenient to upload movies to the Internet via a PC.
Face Detection Technology is also one of the features that come with the SX210 IS. It recognizes up to 35 faces in a scene and automatically adjusts focus and exposure settings so that everyone looks their best. It includes Auto Red-Eye Correction, Face Detection AF/AE/FE and Face Self Timer.
You have complete creative control when using this camera. It is easy to adjust manual settings such as shutter speed, aperture and ISO. This allows the user to experiment with their images and develop advanced skills in picture taking. For the user who is only interested in point and shoot the Easy Mode will disable access to these advanced settings and allow the user to focus their full attention on the subject.
