FYI on Blue Panasonic Lumix
Nikon AW100 Review
Similar in design to other rugged compacts, the Nikon AW100 sports a sealed lens with an internal zoom mechanism, located on the top corner of the camera. It measures 2.6 by 4.4 by 0.9 inches and weighs 6.3 ounces, slightly larger than the 2.5-by-3.8-by-0.9-inch, 5.5-ounce Olympus Tough TG-310. The camera is available in three colors—orange, black, and blue. Its 5x optical zoom lens covers a 28-140mm (35mm equivalent) field of view and has a nice macro capability for capturing smaller objects.
Nikon Coolpix AW100 3-inch, 460k-dot LCD dominates the rear of the camera. It's very bright and sharp, making it easy to frame and review images in a variety of lighting conditions, putting the 2.7-inch, 230k-dot display on the Lumix TS3 to shame. Control buttons are rubberized and sealed, but are quite responsive to the touch. The camera has all the standard control buttons—including a zoom rocker, dedicated movie button, self timer, flash control, and exposure compensation—and adds a special control button on the left side of the camera, called the Action button.
To help take sharp, blur free photos the camera has Hybrid VR, which combines lens-shift and electronic vibration reduction. ISO can be set up to ISO 3200 and Best Shot Selector (BSS) selects the sharpest of up to 10 sequential shots. If you like to shoot in low-light settings there are a number of modes which help even without a tripod including Backlight scene mode with Auto HDR, Night Portrait and Night Landscape. Other features found on the Coolpix AW100 include High speed continuous shooting up to 7.1 fps, Easy Panorama 360°/180°, Action Control and Underwater mode. There are also a number of digital filters available: soft, nostalgic sepia, high-contrast monochrome, high-key, low-key and selective colour. When viewing your images there are a range of editing options available. These include quick retouch, d-lighting, glamour retouch and filter effects which include colour options (vivid, black and white, sepia and cyanotype), soft, selective colour, cross screen, fisheye, miniature effect and fog removal.
It’s been a great year for ruggedized cameras and we see Nikon’s AW100 as the capstone. Many of the features and technologies found throughout various companies’ many toughcam offerings have been brought together and–not quite perfected–but certainly advanced by the AW100. What Pentax tried to accomplish with the WG-1’s GPS transceiver, Nikon has finally got working with the AW100. Sony’s efforts to meld form and function with their TX10, may have resulted in the hardy but stylish look of the AW100, which hints at a purpose-built chassis without looking like a toy. Panasonic’s troubles with sharpness are altogether absent from the AW100, which benefits from a razor sharp, expertly manufactured lens. Of course there’s still plenty of room for improvement. Color accuracy isn’t great, and this will affect both human subjects and landscapes. Haloing and edge enhancements also detract from image quality, which is sad because these are software after-effects and should be optional, but the simplified menu system doesn’t allow it. Noise and noise reduction are also problematic, and again the menus lack an option to fix it. Noise and compression artifacts are observable even at ISO 125, and the smoothing software has a blurring effect at ISO 800 and above.
